Accessibility Statement for the "Salamanders Young Burn Survivors" website

This Accessibility Statement for the "Salamanders Young Burn Survivors" website includes information on: Access Keys, Standards Compliance, Images and Multi-media, Links and Navigation, and Other Design Elements.

Access Keys

Many browsers support jumping to specific locations by pressing defined keys. All pages on this site define these access keys:

s - skip navigation table and go to main content

1 - Home Page

2 - What's new

3 - Site Map / Table of Contents

4 - Search this site

9 - Contact us

0 - Accessibility Statement

Access Keys are currently supported by: IE4+ [Windows], IE5+ [Mac], Mozilla [Windows and Linux], Netscape6+ [Windows], and Opera7 [Windows and Linux]. On Windows, you press Alt + an access key. On Macintosh, you press Control + an access key. Internet Explorer users may also need to press the "enter" key after releasing the ALT and access key buttons.

Standards Compliance

All pages on this site are valid HTML 4.01 Transitional as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

All pages on this site are validated by the W3C CSS Validation Service.

All pages on this site are WCAG AAA approved. I have reviewed all the guidelines and believe that all these pages comply with all priority 1, 2, and 3 guidelines of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0.

All pages on this site are Section 508 approved. I have reviewed all the guidelines and believe that all these pages comply with all of the U.S. Federal Government Section 508 Guidelines.

Images and Multi-media

All images belonging to this site have been optimised for fast loading.

All content images on this site include equivalent ALT text. All purely decorative images are assigned ALT="".

Most pages on this site have no animations. Nowhere on this site are there more than three animated graphics per 1024x768 screen.

This site has no image maps, no audio, no JavaScript, no Flash, and no ActiveX controls. Java applets are used only for the jigsaw puzzles linked from the 'Fun Stuff' page.

Links and Navigation

All areas of this site can be accessed from any page except the printout pages and the jigsaw puzzle pages (each of which opens in a separate window).

The first link on each page of this site is a "skip to content" link, enabling screen readers to bypass the site navigation menu at the beginning of the page.

There is a "top of page" link at the bottom of every page on this site, plus extra "top of page" links (at intervals of no more than two screens at a resolution of 1024x768) in longer pages.

All links on this site have title attributes which describe the link in greater detail, unless the text of the link (ALT text, in the case of image links) already fully describes the target.

All links on this site (both image links and text links) are designed to make sense out of context. Many browsers, including JAWS, Home Page Reader, Lynx, and Opera, can extract the list of links on a page and allow the user to browse the list separately from the page.

Link text and/or titles are only duplicated where two links point to the same address, except for: 1) the within-page links "skip navigation table", "top of page", and "site navigation table"; and 2) where pages within a section are numbered and linked in sequence ("page 1", "page 2", etc.).

Adjacent links are separated either structurally or by interposing a non-blank character. This helps screen readers to render the links distinctly.

All links on this site are written in plain HTML, and can be followed in any browser even if scripting is turned off.

This site does not contain any links which open new windows without warning.

Other Design Elements

Although this site is optimised for viewing in the currently most-used screen resolution of 1024x768 pixels, with Internet Explorer (the currently most-used browser), I have designed it to be still readable and usable in either lower or higher resolutions, and with any browser.

This site uses Cascading Style Sheets for visual design, enabling the pages to be more easily rendered by non-visual user agents. If your browser does not support stylesheets, or if they are switched off, the content of each page is still readable and usable.

This site uses only relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified "text size" option in visual browsers.

The colour combinations used on this site have been checked for visibility to people affected by colour-blindness.

There are no data tables on this site. Tables used for layout purposes are marked as such, and all pages on this site are still readable and usable if your browser does not support tables.

For every form input on this site (except the "site search" which is not under my full control), the associated text has a label tag wrapped around it which explicitly refers to the form input. This not only makes it easier for screen readers to identify what the input is, it also gives the sighted user a larger area to click on with their mouse.

The "natural language" (English) of every page on this site is specified in the markup. Where there is a change in the "natural language" of the text on any page of this site, the change is indicated with the appropriate lang="languagecode" attribute.

All medical terms and other specialised words or phrases on this site are defined in the preceding or following text. All pages of this site except the "about this site" pages (this Accessibility Statement, the Statement of Copyrights, the Statement of Ethics, and the Privacy Policy) are written in simple language. (The Home Page and all Main Content Pages of this site were checked by a ten-year-old child, and found to be understandable.)
